Let’s make Enemalta see the Light!

Energy Costs – How to lower the Tariffs

Stop the Monopoly – that’s how Enemalta Corporation is the sole energy provider for Malta and Gozo – it is  actually a State Monopoly reminiscent of past Socialist Regimes.

Enemalta operates two Power stations, which supply all the electrical power needs of the islands of Malta and Gozo. These have a total combined capacity of 571MW and are nterconnected together. Because  Enemalta enjoys a monopoly it has no real incentive to become efficient – and you as a Consumer have no choice. We need to change this. Enemalta’s Inefficiencies stem from its Monopoly Take for instance the Delimara power station which was built by the Nationalist Government  1998. At the time the technology was state of the art - it is now more than 20 years old and the system is obsolete – it is highly inefficient burning oil at an efficiency of only 32% The situation at the Marsa power station is even worse – the Marsa Power Station is damaging the environment, and damaging the Health of residents in the Marsa / Harbour area The Marsa power station has a dismal efficiency around 27%.

Competition - Remember Vodafone ?

Vodafone enjoyed a monopoly when it first started operations as a mobile telephone company in Malta Vodafone used to charge Lm 100 to provide you with a connection to their mobile network – they could do this because they had a monopoly in mobile telephony.

Things have changed since then, the market has been opened up,  and  there are now several companies providing mobile telephony.

Result this same company is currently offering a free handset and various other offers to entice you to join their network.
Competition is good for the Customer.

Under the Accession Treaty, the importation of fuel should have been fully liberalized by the end of 2005. The market for importation of fuel was only liberalized after the EU executive  started legal proceedings.

  • 1. I do not believe in Monopolies
  • 2. Monopolies are a residue of our Socialist Past.
  • 3. Competition breeds inefficiencies

I will do my utmost to create full competition in the energy sector – and that any new entrant in the field will have a right to join in the National Grid.

This will provide choice to the consumer – and competitive pricing We will all benefit.
